Superintendent reports new SRO, staff training and hires as school year approaches

Superintendent John Suttie told the RSU 23 School Board on Aug. 22 that the district has secured a school resource officer and is preparing for the start of the school year.
"We do have an SRO, Adam Tichy, who was a former SRO in Saco. He will be at the September meeting," Suttie reported. He also said the district currently has three staff openings and that teachers return next Monday and Tuesday; Grades 1–9 are scheduled to start Wednesday and Grades 10–12 on Thursday, per the minutes.
Suttie reported that about 40 staff members participated in BARR (Building Assets, Reducing Risks) training, a prevention program funded by a Department of Education grant that the superintendent said paid for the program. He officially introduced new Business Manager Jason DiDonato and Director of Special Education Heidi Butler and thanked leadership, teaching, custodial and academic support staff for summer work preparing facilities.
On the district's application to the Maine Department of Education, Suttie said the application was due a week after the meeting and that "either Eric or John will drive to Augusta to hand deliver it in time." He added the district "should know by the end of 2025 where we come out on the new list," an expected timeline recorded in the minutes.
The superintendent's report concluded with acknowledgments of summer work by facilities staff and a preview of the upcoming school-year schedule.
