Superintendent John Suttie told the RSU 23 School Board on Dec. 19 that district staff hosted a multi-hour Department of Education (DOE) walkthrough as part of a pending construction application and that he and Assistant Superintendent Eric Hanson also updated the Old Orchard Beach Town Council on several collaborative capital projects.
"They were very thorough and professional," Suttie said of the DOE review, which he said involved about seven hours of walkthroughs of district buildings by DOE staff, Hanson and Kevin Girard. Suttie said the DOE has the district's application and "will let us know by the end of 2025."
Suttie also told the council about joint projects including a new generator, a new warming shelter for the district's crossing guard known as Sally, resurfacing or improvements to pickleball and tennis courts, and work on the track. He characterized the exchanges with the town as updates on collaborative projects rather than finalized agreements.
No funding decisions or contract awards were recorded in the minutes. The board's Finance Committee reported the budget is on track but flagged rising costs in the nutrition program as an area of concern.
