Board approves nonprofit contracts and authorizes immediate hiring of two police officers

The Kernersville Board of Aldermen unanimously approved lists of nonprofit funding contracts included in the adopted budget and authorized immediate hiring activity for two police positions.
Mr. Swisher (town manager) presented the nonprofit agreements that were included in the budget process: general-fund recipients listed in the packet (arts council, chamber of commerce economic development, crisis control, Kernersville Auto Museum, Kernersville Historic Preservation Society, Kernersville Little Theater, Crossroads Playhouse, Next Step Ministries, Salvation Army, Senior Services and Shepherd Center) and occupancy-tax recipients (Chamber tourism, Kernersville Little League, Kerners Folly Foundation). The board moved and unanimously approved those agreements as presented.
On staffing, Swisher reminded the board that the adopted budget included two new police positions scheduled to start in January; because one officer has been out long-term, staff asked permission to recruit/hire one earlier and then fill the second position as needed. After discussion, the board approved a motion to begin hiring for both police positions immediately rather than waiting for the January start, subject to normal recruitment processes.
Board members were advised to identify any conflicts if they serve on any nonprofit boards; staff noted individual recusal would be required if a board member had a conflict with a particular contract. The motions to approve nonprofit contracts and to authorize immediate hiring were both passed unanimously.
