Staff cautioned that if the township closed a purchase before the grant decision, any award could not be applied retroactively to that purchase. “If we got awarded the grant funds, we would not be able to use them because we have already committed to a purchase,” Angela said.
The board balanced that potential grant savings against the vendor’s limited‑time price and the value of a coordinated replacement (including cloud migration and a three‑year replacement cycle the vendor offered). Several supervisors favored waiting for the grant decision. One supervisor summarized the risk/reward: taking the vendor discount guarantees savings now, while waiting could capture federal appropriations but means risking a vendor price increase or losing the immediate bulk discount.
After that discussion, a supervisor moved to table the request to purchase the Motorola package pending the grant outcome; the motion carried on an aye voice vote. Staff said they will return before the board with updated financing scenarios and the appropriations outcome.
