Grama Sapanek, director of marketing and communications for Goodwill Acadiana, told the council the organization offers free educational and employment services across nine parishes, including GED-equivalent programs, job coaching and crisis assistance vouchers.
"People can get their high school diplomas for free with Goodwill Acadiana," Sapanek said, adding the agency runs employment-preparation services and a voucher program for households facing homelessness, fire or flood. She said Goodwill touched about 9,000 lives last year and that 40 people completed the adult-education program to receive high-school-equivalent credentials.
Sapanek noted the organization operates roughly 20 locations across Acadiana and about 10 affordable housing complexes in the New Iberia area that are HUD-approved for low-income, elderly and disabled households. She left printed materials for council members and invited staff and residents to contact Goodwill for outreach and referrals.
Council members thanked Goodwill for local services; one councilor said several services were new information and asked for contact details so the city could refer residents.
Next steps: Goodwill offered to provide contact information to city staff and to work with local partners to increase awareness of available programs.
