The Chula Board of Aldermen heard updates on a park grant and several community events at its April 9 meeting.
Adam Cooksey reported that the Department of Natural Resources has cleared the city to move forward with the environmental portion of a park grant, though the city has not yet received any grant funds. Council members discussed possible materials for park improvements, such as reusing bridge planks and using donated rock and ditching from the Coop.
Kerri Brenner and Kati Westcott outlined local event plans: a taco dinner on April 18, 2026, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at the community center; ongoing efforts to establish a farmers market (Westcott said she is seeking someone to manage it); and planning for a street fair that may require closing Highway K. Westcott noted a group that offers vendor insurance for farmers-market participants at an estimated cost of about $300 per year. The council also discussed whether street-fair expenses (for example sidewalks) would be covered by the city's street fund and said they would check that accounting treatment.
Organizers proposed creating a community-center organization with a minimum of seven members to help run events, institute checks-and-balances for handling money and ensure someone on the committee is bonded. Michelle Haynes offered to operate a photo booth at the street fair but said she needs a better internet connection.
Council members asked staff to review prior minutes for picnic-table decisions and to return with any follow-up on insurance, permits and street closures needed for the fair. No formal approvals of permits or spending for events were made at the meeting.
