Carlos council hears fire-department needs as new fire hall heads to November ballot

Mayor Ronna Berghoff and the City of Carlos Council on June 11 heard an update from Fire Chief Colten Steidl about staffing and equipment needs and reviewed plans for a proposed new fire hall that would go before voters in November 2026.
Chief Colten Steidl presented the May call log and told the council four firefighters will require new structural turnout gear, which he estimated will cost about $16,000 for four sets. The department is working to consolidate multiple old department accounts and plans to transfer remaining funds to the Relief Association Fund once consolidation is complete.
Council members discussed public education and funding structure for a proposed new fire hall. The Joint Powers Agreement (JPA) Board anticipates advertising for bids in late June or July; the project is expected to be placed on the November 2026 ballot. Council members noted that, if voters do not approve the project, obtaining annual financial contributions from Carlos Township could be more difficult.
On motions recorded in the minutes, the council adopted Resolution 2026-10 accepting a $5,000 contribution for the Carlos Fire Department; the resolution passed with all ayes. The minutes indicate routine budget and fundraising discussions will continue as the JPA and city prepare materials for public outreach ahead of the ballot question.
The council did not take any final action on a capital financing plan at the meeting; the next steps are expected to include bid advertising by the JPA and voter education before the November election.
