The Meridian Hills Town Council on July 14 approved a motion to set aside up to $8,000 to install solar-powered flashing stop signs at select intersections and to research and install a radar speed sign on Pennsylvania Street, after a discussion about replacement-cost estimates.
Town Engineer Borden told the council that replacing the inoperable radar speed sign on Pennsylvania Street would cost roughly $10,000 for a full replacement; councilors discussed less expensive alternatives (roughly $3,400) and decided to authorize up to $8,000 for flashing stop signs on east/west approaches at 75th & Pennsylvania, to add flashing stop signs at Illinois & 75th, and to pursue radar-sign options. Council Member Jacoby moved the allocation and Council Member Gordon seconded; the motion passed 5-0.
Borden also provided a project update: the 2024-01 CCMG pavement project (Midwest Paving) is complete with minimal punch-list items remaining; 2024-02 (Baumgartner) began the week of July 14 with milling completed the same day and final work expected by July 18. The prefinal walkthrough for the Pennsylvania Street bridge over Williams Creek was completed July 7 and the bridge is open; some contract residue remains on the deck and is on the contractor’s punch list.
On sidewalks and development work, Borden said the topographical survey and proposed sidewalk exhibit for 75th Street (Penn to Washington Blvd.) are complete and that he provided the exhibit to Council President Freihofer for distribution to council members. He reported Citizens Energy Group completed water and gas service installations at 35 W. 72nd St. for the Meridian Pointe development and that Metronet boring along Meridian Hills Blvd is complete. Borden also noted CEG repaired a sinkhole related to a storm pipe failure near 73rd Street.
The council asked Borden to follow up with Citizens Energy Group about a leaking valve on Illinois Street north of 75th and to provide cost estimates for proposed radar and flashing signs at the September meeting.
