Meridian Hills council approves minutes, vouchers, two variances and authorizes AED purchase

The Meridian Hills Town Council met March 10 and approved routine administrative items, authorized a police department equipment purchase and granted two property variances.
President Walter Freihofer called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. and the council immediately approved minutes from Jan. 13 and Feb. 10 (motions passed 4-0). Clerk Treasurer John Dillon presented the voucher packet and the January 2025 financial packet, which the council approved by voice vote.
Dillon also presented the January bank reconciliation and alerted the council to unidentified charges on a town credit card that was previously issued in former Clerk Treasurer Jim Rush’s name; the card was canceled and a replacement issued in Dillon’s name. Town Marshall Mike Russo reported a repair estimate of about $2,300 for the department Chevrolet Tahoe. Russo told the council the department’s automated external defibrillator is out of service and that the manufacturer, Philips, does not support battery replacement; President Freihofer moved and Councilmember Craig Huse seconded a motion allowing the Police Department to purchase a new AED, which passed 4-0.
The council considered two property variances. Petitioner Mitchell Kampman won approval for a second driveway curb cut and construction of a 42‑inch front‑yard fence at 7499 N Illinois St after Kampman cited safety concerns and provided neighbor support (motion by President Freihofer, second by Councilmember Greg Jacoby; passed 4-0). Separately, Joe Hawkins received approval to reduce a north side setback from 15 feet to 12 feet at 6445 N Illinois St to accommodate a replacement garage (motion by Councilmember Greg Jacoby, second by Councilmember Craig Huse; passed 4-0).
With no further business, Councilmember Cole Marr moved to adjourn; the motion was seconded by Councilmember Jacoby and the meeting ended at 7:47 p.m.
