Fire chief reports quarterly runs, equipment needs and FEMA closeout

Chief Allan Clark updated the Sugar Hill Selectmen on the fire department’s first-quarter activity and equipment needs at the April 14 meeting.
Chief Clark said the department handled three runs in January, 10 in February and five in March. He briefed the board on a recent fire on Dyke Road and reported that the station’s boiler, which is about five years old, failed this winter after a regulator froze at the tank. The chief said he is investigating a replacement and noted funds are available in the Capital Reserve Fund (CRF) if needed.
Clark told the board he has contacted the town’s propane supplier regarding the regulator failure and said he is working with Ski Hearth Farm on a waiver request for a water tank; the Fire Marshal’s Office is involved in the latter review. He also said new SCBA tanks for the department are scheduled for delivery in July and that payment will come from CRF and ARPA funds. On hazardous-materials coverage, Clark said the Haz-Mat district will cover Grafton County only (not Coos County) and that Twin State dues will cover the related costs.
On federal reimbursement, Chief Clark said FEMA is closing out the Indian Brook incident and that he is seeking compensation for his time up to $35,000; per the minutes, the town would pay any amount up front and then be reimbursed by FEMA. Clark also said he would pursue lighting upgrades at the station and will coordinate with the town administrator on an Eversource contact. Finally, the chief said he will work with a resident who has generated multiple false alarms under the town’s alarm ordinance.
