Commissioners approve routine permits and discuss uncashed checks, tree removal and weed complaint

The Steele County Board of Commissioners handled a set of routine administrative matters and directed staff follow-up on several operational issues.

Building permits: The board approved three building permits — two pole barns in Sharon and one residential structure (likely farm-exempt) — by unanimous voice vote.

Uncashed checks: The county auditor/treasurer reported four checks older than a year remain uncashed. Staff noted a stop-payment fee ($30 charged by the bank) could exceed some check amounts (one check was $20). The board asked staff to contact the bank to request fee waivers and to send notice letters to the payees before moving funds to unclaimed property.

Tree removal: Staff presented two written estimates for removal of a tree and stumps near the courthouse and in the log-cabin area: one local service quoted $2,000; another contractor quoted $1,000 and provided proof of insurance. The board asked for written bids and insurance documentation before proceeding.

Weed-board complaint: Staff filed a written complaint concerning a Broadland Township property owned by Eugene Shell (listed with Whitetail Properties) and found species (kosha and waterhemp) that fall under the county’s noxious-weed jurisdiction. The board directed staff to attempt phone contact and send a certified letter if needed; staff recommended mowing initially and spot-spraying if regrowth warrants it.

Other routine matters: Roads and public-health updates were provided in separate agenda items; the board set next steps on budget review for the August meeting.
