Carter County commissioners appoint Shannon Burchett as highway superintendent

The nomination came from Commissioner Nancy Brown. Aaron Frazier moved and Jerry Proffitt seconded a motion to cease nominations and appoint Burchett by acclimation; the electronic vote recorded 24 yes votes and the motion carried. Burchett was sworn in by Carter County Clerk Mary Gouge immediately after the vote.
During public comment earlier in the meeting, Charles Von Cannon thanked commissioners for funding nonprofits and explicitly advocated for Burchett’s appointment. The appointment filled the county’s acting-superintendent vacancy and formalized the position with a unanimous commission vote.
The action was recorded on the official meeting pages and is reflected in the meeting minutes and roll call for the Aug. 21 session. There was no separate discussion of compensation or an employment contract on the record during the appointment motion.
The commission proceeded with other agenda business after the swearing-in; no additional votes or appeals of the appointment were recorded.
