Residents and commissioners raise transparency and local concerns at Carter County meeting

Charles Von Cannon thanked the commission for its funding of nonprofits and advocated that Shannon Burchett become Road Superintendent. Andy Hilton, identified as president of the Youth Baseball and Softball commission, said he had replied to a request for information and asked to be placed on the next agenda to address a decision to charge parking at ball games; Chair Ginger Holdren responded that the email Hilton received was from a single commissioner, not the commission.
During commissioner comments, Commissioner Donnie Cable said he saw a “lack of transparency,” asked the finance department to present monthly reports to the legislative body, and raised concerns about Gap Creek Park, traffic on Bob Little Road and about $6.3 million allocated for a Tweetsie Trail expansion. Finance Director Carolyn Watson responded that the monthly financial reports are provided in the meeting packet, both printed and emailed each month.
Commissioners also promoted local events: Robert Acuff described the Sept. 14 Boys & Girls Club fundraiser and offered seats for commissioners; Thomas Proffitt noted an Aug. 26 bridge dedication. Chair Ginger Holdren reminded commissioners that committee elections occur next month and asked members to submit requests to the clerk’s office.
