Commission hears broadband and communications updates; mayor previews Watauga Lake project

For broadband, Commissioner Robert Acuff reported in place of an absent SkyLine/SkyBest representative that the Tiger Valley and Little Milligan areas are expected to be completed by next summer. Residents were directed to www.fiber.skybest.com for status updates.
Communications Director Mark Ridings reported progress on a new system and said the White Rock tower should be operational by March, weather depending. Commissioner Bradley Johnson asked whether the equipment for the new system had been purchased; Ridings answered that the equipment had not yet been purchased.
Mayor Patty Woodby briefed commissioners on the Bill Dance Watauga Lake project and said the county sent an email describing updates planned at Rat Branch Boat Dock, an associated advertising campaign, and a tournament scheduled for 2024 that should align with the Tweetsie Trail project.
These updates were presented as status reports; no procurement votes for the communications equipment were recorded at this meeting. The landfill committee reported it has a contract with Eastman that will be forwarded to the County Attorney for review.
