Desha County quorum court adopts 2024 budget, passes ordinances and approves sheriff grant applications

The Desha County Quorum Court adopted the county's 2024 budget and approved a slate of ordinances and resolutions at its Oct. 19, 2023 meeting.
Ordinance 2023-17, which establishes the 2024 county budget, was read in full by County Clerk Valerie Donaldson. JP2 G. Lynn Weatherford moved to suspend the rules for second and third readings; JP8 Dollie Wilson seconded. After the required roll calls and readings by title, the court voted to adopt the ordinance. The clerk recorded the final vote as nine in favor and zero opposed.
The court also passed Ordinance 2023-16, an appropriation ordinance amending the sheriff's contribution fund. The ordinance was read in full and, following motions to suspend the rules and required readings, passed by roll call (9 for, 0 against).
In new business the court approved Resolution 2023-16, which allocates funds from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 for countywide projects. JP7 Rita Kolb moved to approve the resolution; JP6 Kenneth Holt seconded and the resolution passed unanimously.
The court further authorized the Desha County Sheriff to apply for two grants from the Arkansas Department of Public Safety. Resolution 2023-17 permits the sheriff to seek an equipment grant; JP8 Dollie Wilson moved to accept and JP1 Troy Jackson seconded. Resolution 2023-18 authorizes a S.T.E.P. overtime grant application; JP2 G. Lynn Weatherford moved to accept and JP5 Hollis Mankin seconded. Both resolutions were approved unanimously.
