On May 26 the Obetz City Council unanimously approved meeting minutes, adopted an emergency appropriation ordinance for police uniforms, paving and sewer-backup expenses, removed a previously tabled bond-notes ordinance from the table and adopted it, and swore in a new police officer.
At its May 26 meeting the Obetz City Council handled routine business and several formal actions, all recorded by unanimous vote.
Minutes and swearing-in: Council approved the May 11 minutes (motion by Todd Gibbs, second by Guiles Richardson) and Mayor Angela Kirk swore in Christopher Green Jr. as a police officer.
Appropriations: Law Director Gene Hollins reviewed Ordinance 33-26, an emergency amendment to the 2026 appropriations to cover police uniforms, Alum Creek Drive paving work, expenses related to a recent sewer backup, and the notes reissuance. Council suspended the rules and adopted the ordinance by unanimous vote.
Bond notes: Council removed Ordinance 23-26 from the table and adopted an ordinance authorizing up to $1,500,000 in general-obligation limited-tax, tax-exempt notes for public utility and related improvements. Hollins told Council the underlying project is not moving forward and recommended a 'no' vote; the Council nevertheless voted to adopt the ordinance unanimously.
Administration reports and committee notices: Deputy Police Chief Rob Rigby reported 928 calls for service since the last meeting, 60 citations and 32 reports; he said the department’s recently approved facial-recognition program had already assisted in solving two theft cases. Councilmember Derek Varney announced a Committee of the Whole meeting on June 8 at 5:00 p.m. to discuss parking; Assistant Law Director Joe McDaniels said he will present a menu of options. Community Services Director Stacey Boumis said the Planning & Zoning Commission will meet June 10 and promoted upcoming events including Zucchinifest and Independence Day activities.
