Roanoke County board hears progress report on CTE center and two elementary schools

Project managers updated the Roanoke County School Board on July 9 about construction progress at the new Career and Technical Education (CTE) center and two elementary schools, saying the work is on track and moving into final fit-out and punch-list stages.
The CTE center presenter said “a lot of the major MEP stuff is done — masonry, electrical and plumbing” and that labs, windows and doors have been installed and access control work has started. The presenter added the generator had a startup issue that the manufacturer corrected and crews have begun final cleaning and installing cosmetology and culinary equipment. The board was shown photos of fenced site work, converted ponds and casework installations.
Board members asked whether commissioning remained to be done and about the occupancy schedule. The presenter explained commissioning is an ongoing checklist process through project completion and said the team is “looking good on our schedule” with a target to be ready for January occupancy if final finishes are completed in December.
Updates on the two elementary schools described similar final-phase work: libraries and gyms are almost complete, elevators are installed, asphalt work and parking-cap capping are near completion, and crews are addressing punch-list items like electrical receptacles and finishing touches. One presenter noted they had completed a shutdown to swap old switchgear to new switchgear without incident.
Board members thanked the construction team and noted community interest from potential partners. Presenters warned that although most work is near completion, remaining punch-list items can be numerous and urged patience as final corrections are made.
The board did not take final action on the projects at the work session; presenters asked that updates and any required contract actions be placed on the consent agenda or brought back to a regular meeting as needed.
