Brockton Public Schools highlights student programs, literacy gains and $11 million in energy grants

At the start of the meeting the superintendent highlighted a string of district accomplishments and updates, from student events to staff recognitions and grant awards.
She said about 200 Brockton High School female students participated in a "confidence day" at the Shaw Center organized with Dress for Success Boston and BHS teacher Katie Balboni. The district also split its Special Olympics spring school day games into two days this year and held elementary and middle school fitness days, which drew family volunteers and Promise student helpers.
On literacy, the superintendent credited districtwide gains to Lexia Core5 and Lexia English implementations combined with coaching and targeted intervention. "Sixty‑four percent of Lexia Core5 students advanced at least one full grade level this year," she said, and among students meeting usage 77% progressed a full grade level.
Staff recognitions included BPS health and wellness director Dennis Genich receiving MassDOT's Nikki Tishler Memorial Award for leadership in Safe Routes to School. The district also credited work on decarbonization, LED streetlight conversions and partnerships with National Grid and Mass Save that secured more than $11,000,000 in grants, incentives and technical assistance.
The superintendent announced Colleen Prowler, who joined Gilmore as interim principal in spring 2025, will remain as Gilmore's permanent principal. The superintendent said the district will continue to share data on literacy outcomes and return with updates as they receive more verified information from the city and partners.
The meeting included community congratulations for Ashfield Middle School's civic leadership award and scholarship recipients; members proposed publicly recognizing the students at a later meeting.
