The chair announced that the Watertown website is live, and the parks and recreation staff used the commission meeting to outline logistics for a July 4 celebration at Crestbrook Park.
Staff member described the event plan: “on July 4 at sunset, at Crestbrook Park, there's going to be a 250th anniversary celebration for the country from 11 to 2,” and said organizers will encourage parking at the YMCA with a shuttle for seniors and volunteers (including the Lions Club) providing traffic and parking direction.
Staff also discussed proposed facility improvements — replacing the manual bingo board with an automated display and adding wireless microphones and speakers so event announcements are clearer and more consistent.
Members debated outreach strategies given the town paper no longer publishes. Staff said they intend to submit a press release to the Water River Republican and suggested flyers at polling places, window postings and use of the senior-center mailing list to reach residents. A member recommended in-person outreach and asked whether the town’s emergency notification system could be used for event notices.
Staff noted food and desserts will be served at the July 4 event and that children from local schools will recite sections of the Declaration of Independence; times and shuttle plans were emphasized to make the event accessible to seniors.
The commission voted informally to set the plan and proceed with outreach; members agreed to put some promotional tasks into operation and to revisit specific logistics as needed.
