Reading the June minutes, the clerk (S1) reported a checking account balance of $192,022.91 and a CD balance of $40,809.53; the minutes also note an audit invoice of $3,506.55 that will be taken out of June property taxes. Later in the meeting members recapped updated cash figures (the clerk referenced a checking balance later in discussion of about $209,944.81), and the council agreed that budget planning for fiscal 2027 must begin soon.
Members discussed grant-related budgeting. The clerk said the council needs to ensure money for the town's 20% match on a community crossing grant. The council also discussed outreach and staffing for the treasurer position, including whether to change the current arrangement into an appointment so the town could recruit beyond family members. One member suggested posting on Facebook to solicit interest from residents or people who work in Wayne County government with experience in state and county paperwork.
The council heard that Barb will meet with a Ball State representative this summer to inspect the park and potentially make the park a project for Ball State's landscape architecture class. That potential partnership was discussed as a low-cost way to get landscape planning help.
Separately, members noted a record-keeping issue: a demolition cost from 2024 was presented as a quote rather than an invoice, which could prevent the town from billing the work back to a property. The clerk said without an invoice they "can't" recoup the amount and the council discussed writing it off.
Next steps: the council set budget-planning work to begin, will confirm the community crossing grant match in upcoming meetings, and will pursue outreach for a treasurer candidate if members agree to change the role to an appointment.
