Berne Park Board elects officers, addresses scoreboard placement and field maintenance

The Chair opened the meeting, confirmed a quorum and led the board through organizational items, including electing new officers and routine park maintenance approvals.

A committee member moved to elect Doug Beal as park board president; another committee member seconded the motion and the Chair announced the motion passed. The board then elected Nathan Springer as vice president following a separate motion and second.

Board members turned to a recently installed minor-league scoreboard. The Presenter and a committee member described installation limitations: the lifting equipment used could not reach the desired height, wiring was exposed and would require rewiring if the scoreboard is raised, and raising the unit may require different equipment such as a telehandler or crane. The Presenter said the current wiring must be addressed if the board opts to raise the unit.

On field maintenance, the Chair presented a vendor quote for topdressing the diamonds: the quoted 24 tons including shipping and tax-exempt delivery was just over $13,000. Board members discussed scheduling the work for the fall (after Labor Day) to avoid spring wet-weather delays and agreed to approve the quote pending confirmation about whether the work counts as ‘construction’ under DNR rules. The Chair said staff will check with the grant administrator before ordering and confirm delivery timing with the vendor.

The board also approved a motion authorizing Tim (maintenance) to perform fall spraying and required park maintenance as allowed. The board approved minutes from April 9, 2026, confirmed its next meeting for Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m., and adjourned.
