Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that a recently approved new hire has not responded to contact attempts and that he is assuming the candidate is no longer interested.
"He said he has tried to make contact but has had no luck. He is assuming he is no longer interested," Pernice reported. Pernice said he will contact the hiring consortium, check with the Civil Service Commission to set up oral exams and will send out letters to candidates.
Pernice said his operational preference remains hiring two part‑time officers, but that only one part‑time position was approved by council. Council agreed to continue searching for one part‑time officer and to proceed with Civil Service steps to identify qualified candidates.
No vote was required at the meeting; the chief will follow up with the consortium and report back to council when further steps are scheduled.
