On Oct. 8 the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors proclaimed the day a Day of Action for the county’s Master Plan for Aging. County staff and advisory-committee members described an outreach process that included roughly 800 surveys and 16 listening sessions conducted across the county to shape local priorities.
County staff said California’s 2020 Master Plan for Aging provided grant funding that allowed San Luis Obispo County to develop a local plan tailored to the region. The local effort — described by staff and advisory members as SLO MPA — will focus on four pillars: housing that supports aging in place, health care access, social connections and caregiver supports. Staff and nonprofit leaders said early work has already spurred initiatives such as expanding adult day centers and pursuing an assisted‑living waiver to expand options for older residents.
The board and community members emphasized that the county’s senior population share exceeds the state average and that the plan will provide a strategic framework for aligning services. The initial local plan draft is expected to be released for board consideration in March 2025.
What’s next: staff will continue outreach, refine plan recommendations with the consultant (Health Management Associates), and return to the board for adoption work in 2025.
