Town departments report summer events, road projects and staffing updates
Summary
Parks, Public Works, Planning and Police reported summer programming, infrastructure progress and staffing developments at the July 9 Avon council meeting, including two certified playground inspectors and planning for roundabout utilities and Dan Jones widening.
Several town departments used the July 9 meeting to brief the council on summer programs, infrastructure work and staffing.
Parks Department representative Shelby Pride said parks staff now include two certified Playground Safety Inspectors, the Honey Bee Habitat has been expanded to two hives, Pickle Patch utilities are complete, and the Farmers Market will host a Berry Festival on July 14 and a Corn Roast on Aug. 25; Parks staff also listed family events scheduled for August.
Public Works Director Steve Moore reported utilities work advancing for the 100N and Raceway roundabout, progress on Dan Jones widening across multiple phases, CCMG concrete work nearing completion ahead of asphalt resurfacing, and ongoing pothole repairs that have used 24 bags of cold patch this month; he also noted town staff member Betsy collected over $20,000 in permits and installed 28 signs this month.
Paul Lambie of the Planning Department said the Board of Zoning Appeals denied a carwash special exception in June, a Plan Commission waiver for Fairwood was approved, and the August Plan Commission agenda already includes multiple petitions; staff are working with IWorq to enable online application submissions. Deputy Chief Margason of Avon Police Department reported that Officer Redman will begin ILEA training on Aug. 30, investigators made a dealer-level drug seizure during a night-shift stop, two candidates on the hiring list are promising, and Officer Cheek was selected for the Emergency Response Team.
Clerk Treasurer Julie Loker said staff are preparing 2027 budget forms and closing fiscal year numbers as of June 30; department reports will be distributed to council next week.
