Commission reviews $500,000 gazebo redesign and signals preference for octagon plan

Melinda Whitten of MC Smith & Associates presented two redesign options for the Vande Luyster Square gazebo, both of which add elevated stairs, ADA-accessible ramps and retain the structure’s existing aesthetic. Commissioners discussed the proposals and indicated a preference for Option I, an octagon design with an exterior diamond-pattern railing and some roof-pitch changes.
Assistant City Manager/Finance Director Kevin Plockmeyer told the commission both options are in the approximate $500,000 range and that staff will return to the commission with updated cost estimates as part of the FY2027 budgeting process. Commissioners voiced concern about the price and asked for comparisons to the city’s existing parks priorities before committing to the design.
The commission asked staff to forward the City of Zeeland 2021 Five-Year Parks and Recreation Plan so members can re-review project priorities and confirm whether the gazebo project aligns with that plan. Plockmeyer said he expects clearer FY2027 budget figures by March and will ask MC Smith to provide revised estimates and any playground options for Lawrence Park at that time.
The commission did not take a final vote on the gazebo design at the Dec. 10 meeting; next steps are a cost update and review of the 2021 parks plan at the March meeting.
