Board members reviewed the draft 2026–27 code of conduct as an informational item and raised questions about distribution and student review. Dr. Edlund asked how the code would be distributed at the start of the year and how staff would review it with students.
A board member proposed explicitly adding hair nondiscrimination language to the code, saying, “To add in, nondiscriminating for hair, include that into nondiscrimination, and represent the CROWN Act.” The suggestion was accepted as an addition to be considered when the code returns as an individual approval item later in the month.
Dr. Edlund also summarized testimony delivered to the Interim Joint Committee on Education regarding screen time and cited emerging research. “Some of the research that’s emerging around digital instruction and it being correlated with lower cognitive development,” Dr. Edlund said, urging the board to begin thinking about possible district recommendations and to work with the superintendent and other leaders on next steps.
Board members and the superintendent described the calendar and policy committee work that will bring recommended language and any specific proposals back for first reading; the attorney noted the board has an Aug. 15 statutory deadline to complete the K–SBA updates that intersect with the code of conduct review.
