Red Bank council introduces rent-control update, schedules July public hearing

A resident who identified herself as Christina thanked the council for bringing forward the update, saying it came on the recommendation of the rent control board and the board’s attorney and reflects experience enforcing the local code. “This ordinance came at the recommendation of the rent control board and their attorney from the experiences that they’ve had over many years,” Christina said, adding the changes will “modernize the definitions” and strengthen protections when harassment and other rent-control issues overlap.
City officials said the ordinance will clarify who qualifies for tenant protections, what state-ordered exemptions apply, and what steps are necessary to obtain an exemption. The mayor noted the council intends to gather public input at the July 23 hearing before any further readings.
