Derek Chaney, a service worker at Amherst Park, described the day-to-day tasks that keep the park open and usable for visitors. "We got like 5 different parking lots out here where we keep the, parking lot clean," Chaney said, listing trash removal, mowing and vegetation trimming among routine duties.
Chaney said bathroom maintenance is a priority for the crew. "Gotta keep that bathroom clean, smelling like bleach fabuloso," he said, adding that staff open the front gate and the bathrooms around 7 a.m. and mow early "while it's cool before it get crowded." The schedule, he said, helps staff avoid peak visitor times while completing work.
He described additional responsibilities that support recreational use: emptying trash cans, keeping trails clear of overhanging branches and maintaining a boat ramp that attracts tubers when the weather warms. "Then on the weekend, you got people that rent the pavilions. They have birthday parties, family reunions," Chaney said, noting the varied demands weekend events place on maintenance.
Chaney framed the job as a team effort, saying coworkers cover for each other when items are missed and that friendly interactions with visitors make the work easier. "Everybody look out for 1 another," he said, adding that positive feedback from park users motivates staff to "work harder."
The remarks were delivered as a public comment about park operations; the transcript records no formal motion or decision related to Chaney’s statements.
