Council holds first readings on airport and commercial zoning amendments; hearings receive no public testimony

The Enumclaw City Council opened two public hearings and held first readings May 26 for ordinance 28‑37 and ordinance 28‑38.
Winston Larson, the city’s senior planner, told the council that ordinance 28‑37 would amend the airport zoning district to reduce minimum side‑yard setbacks from 20 feet to 10 feet and allow a maximum structure height of 18 feet where the airport zoning district abuts residential property. "The proposed amendments contribute to the implementation of our existing 2024 comprehensive plan by offering clearer and more adaptable development standards within the airport zoning district," Larson said.
The second hearing, for ordinance 28‑38, addressed expanded permitted uses in commercial and light industrial districts — including arts and vocational schools, gyms, health studios, and animal shelters — and established definitions and standards for animal shelters, daycare and boarding (setbacks, indoor pens/kennel standards and waste disposal). Larson said the planning commission reviewed the proposals and on April 23 recommended the council approve them.
Both hearings received no public testimony and were closed at 7:12 p.m. (28‑37) and 7:17 p.m. (28‑38). Council may adopt, modify or reject the ordinances in later proceedings after additional deliberation and ordinance readings.
