The Candia Conservation Commission re-elected Judi Lindsey as chair and Leon Austin as vice chair and voted to authorize a boundary survey of the Dennis Lewis Forest not to exceed $15,000 to prepare for a potential Bear-Paw conservation easement.
At the commission’s May 19 meeting, Chair Judi Lindsey called the session to order at 7 p.m. and members unanimously approved the April minutes after Carol Howe moved to accept them and Gary Bashline seconded.
The commission recorded nominations and acceptances for officers: Judi Lindsey was nominated and accepted for chair; Leon Austin was nominated and accepted for vice chair. No vote totals beyond “all in agreement” were recorded in the minutes.
On a separate motion, Ron Laverdure moved to accept a proposal authorizing Jim Franklin to perform, as needed, boundary surveys of the Dennis Lewis Forest and the parcel across the road, explicitly excluding the old dump. Tom DiMaggio seconded the motion; the minutes state the motion passed with all in favor. The motion set a maximum cost of $15,000 for the work and tied the survey to preparing materials for Bear-Paw when the commission is placed on that organization’s easement agenda.
Commissioners also discussed forest management and trail maintenance. Ron Laverdure said Scout Corbyn Aio asked about walking the Flint Road Town Forest blue trail for an Eagle Scout project; Ron suggested using aluminum flashing for trail markers with stainless steel screws, and Tom DiMaggio suggested adding rubber washers so the screws can be backed out over time. Ron said he would pass the marker-material recommendations on to Corbyn.
Under old business, members reported no new updates on GIS mapping or grant applications. Judi Lindsey said she photographed student artwork for possible use in the commission’s calendars and noted the photos will need to be scanned.
During other business the commission discussed outreach for Candia’s U.S. 250th Declaration of Independence celebration scheduled for Saturday, June 27; Judi said she would look into obtaining state booklets to distribute. Members also discussed marking boundaries of the conservation parcel on Fogarty Road that borders Soha’s Pond and considered using cork for the Flint Road kiosk.
Tom DiMaggio moved to adjourn at 8:10 p.m.; Carol Howe seconded, and the meeting was adjourned. The minutes are signed "Respectfully submitted, Janet Lewis."
