Highway commissioner to pursue LTE wage increase; committee backs resolution to raise starting pay

Highway Commissioner Ben Rich told the Oneida County Public Works Committee that, following the committee’s earlier recommendation to increase LTE wages, he plans to include a higher starting wage in the 2027 staffing request but believes the change will require a formal county resolution. Rich said increasing the starting wage from $18.73 to $21.21 and reducing LTE positions from eight to seven would produce an approximate savings of $500.
Committee member Billy Fried asked whether reducing the number of LTE positions would impair the department’s ability to generate revenue through additional work. Rich responded that it would not affect the current year because funding was not available for additional work. After discussion, Fried moved and Chair Ted Cushing seconded a motion to bring back a resolution requesting an LTE wage increase of one level on the pay scale; the motion carried.
The committee did not adopt the resolution at this meeting but directed staff to prepare a formal resolution for consideration at a future meeting.
