The Dodge County Board of Equalization met July 16 in Fremont and resolved 129 property valuation protests for 2025, lowering assessed values on 85 parcels, raising values on two parcels and denying changes for 39, the board’s minutes show.
The board also rejected one protest as filed after the June 30 deadline, acknowledged the withdrawal of one protest and accepted one correction that combined a protested parcel with another, leaving the protested parcel inactive with a zero value. The board took these determinations as part of its formal action on the protests.
Mitch Hart, Dodge County head appraiser, told the board that assessor’s staff are often left to defend valuations without seeing the reasoning behind referees’ recommendations. “The referees need to be held accountable as to how they are setting values,” Hart said, adding that many referee reports are returned without explanation of the numbers.
The board asked the assessor’s office to schedule a meeting with the referees before next year’s protest season so the office can lay out expectations; Chairman Missel said he thinks a few members of the board of supervisors should also attend that meeting.
The board declared the meeting legally convened, unanimously approved the agenda, and recessed at 9:56 a.m. The Board of Equalization reconvenes at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, according to the clerk’s record.
