Sharon Board of Education elects Philip O’Reilly chair; Nancy Hegy Martin vice chair, Peter Birnbaum secretary

The Sharon Board of Education elected Philip O’Reilly as chair at its hybrid meeting on Nov. 17, 2025, after Superintendent Melony Brady-Shanley opened the session and called the roll. O’Reilly won the chair vote six to one over Nancy Hegy Martin; the superintendent then turned the meeting over to Chair O’Reilly.
Nancy Hegy Martin was chosen as vice chair by unanimous vote, and Peter Birnbaum was elected secretary unanimously. Nominations and seconds were recorded for each position: the motions and seconds were made by sitting board members and carried without contest for the vice chair and secretary offices.
Chair O’Reilly asked board members to sign up for committee assignments and requested that members email their choices to him or Vice Chair Nancy Hegy Martin ahead of the December meeting. The board was sent a document listing available committees for sign-up; a brief discussion of assignments followed.
The board approved the consent agenda by motion of Peter Birnbaum, seconded by Cathy Winburn; the motion carried unanimously.
During the public-comment period, Jessica Fowler said she will arrange a joint meeting with the Board of Finance and the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Education to discuss Town of Sharon finances. "I will be setting up a Tri board meeting with the Board of Finance, Board of Selectmen, and Board of Education to discuss the Town of Sharon finances," Fowler said.
The board asked members to submit committee preferences prior to the December meeting; no substantive policy votes tied to leadership changes were recorded at this session.
