Compton council accepts city manager resignation, approves interim appointment and restated agreement

The Compton City Council reported out from closed session July 7 that it had accepted the resignation of City Manager Willie Hopkins and, by recorded vote, approved an interim appointment and related compensation pending recruitment for a permanent city manager.
The city attorney told the council that direction was given to staff on recruitment and that there was "no reportable action at this time aside from" acceptance of the resignation. The attorney summarized votes reported in closed session as three yeses and one abstention for acceptance of the resignation and for interim appointment and compensation adjustments.
Later on the regular agenda the council considered and adopted a separate resolution (Item 22) that approved the appointment of a retired administrator as acting or interim city manager and restated an employment agreement with findings under Government Code sections cited in staff materials. The roll call for that resolution was recorded as three yes votes and one abstention, and the resolution passed.
Council members said staff will continue recruitment for a permanent city manager and that interim arrangements will remain in place until a permanent appointment is made or further council action occurs. The city attorney and staff noted the compensation decision was contingent upon adoption of the manager salary schedule.
