Families demand answers after Compton holiday shootings; sheriff pledges investigation and increased patrols

A family member of the 19‑year‑old victim described finding her sister’s body left uncovered for hours at the Wilmington Arms and pressed the council to request a formal review by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the coroner’s office. “She was 19… They were stepping over her,” the speaker said, asking the city to pursue policy changes so families are not left without information.
A grandmother who identified herself as the victim’s grandmother recounted searching hospitals for the family’s loved one the night of the shooting and said she was heartbroken to see the next morning that the victim’s body remained on public display: “My granddaughter is not trash,” she said.
Several community leaders called for new public‑safety protocols for large gatherings and for the city to require better event permitting and security at private block parties. Speakers asked whether the July 4 gathering was permitted; city staff told the council no city permit request had been received for the block event.
W. McIntosh of the Compton Sheriff’s Station read a prepared statement from the station that homicide detectives are actively investigating two separate fatal shootings in the city (one on July 4 and another on July 5), are reviewing footage and interviewing witnesses, and have deployed extra summer enforcement patrols. The sheriff’s statement urged anyone with information to contact the homicide bureau at (323) 890‑5500 or Crime Stoppers.
Council members pressed the sheriff’s captain to investigate the complaints that deputies failed to preserve dignity or the scene. Councilwoman Duhart requested that station internal affairs investigate allegations raised at the meeting. The mayor said the city manager and the mayor would meet with the station captain the next day to discuss residents’ concerns and promised council follow‑up.
No formal disciplinary decisions were announced at the meeting; the sheriff’s representative reiterated that any administrative complaints will be investigated and encouraged community members to submit footage and witness information to assist detectives.
