Shriners donate pool passes; council approves annual write-offs and bills

At the July 7 Torrington City Council meeting, the Torrington Shrine Club offered a donation of individual municipal pool passes to the Department of Family Services to help children who might otherwise be unable to use the pool this summer.
Shay Bates, speaking for the Torrington Shrine Club, said the group purchased $400 worth of individual $3 pool passes and turned them over to DFS for distribution. A DFS representative said the passes will benefit many young children and families served by the department.
The council also approved the city’s 2026 annual write-off list presented by Clerk-Treasurer Lynette Strecker: $7,969.38 in utility accounts and $200 in accounts receivable deemed uncollectible under the applicable statute and collection practices. Strecker and council members noted the city bills about $14.8 million in utilities annually and described the write-offs as a small fraction of that total.
Finally, the council reviewed and approved bills submitted between June 17 and July 7, including payments for cemetery tree plantings and ongoing project invoices. Council members noted opportunities for donations (benches, trees) at parks and the cemetery.
All items passed by voice vote.
