Crawford County commissioners vacate Dunkirk street, approve sheriff vehicle and bridge plan update

The Crawford County Board of Commissioners on June 30 in Girard adopted a resolution to vacate a platted alley and a portion of Ninth Street in the Town of Dunkirk, approved purchases for the sheriff’s fleet and authorized a contract to update aging bridge plans.
County Counselor Jim Emerson told the board there had been no written objections or phone calls opposing the Dunkirk street vacation during the public hearing. After no public comment, the board adopted Resolution #2026-024 to close and vacate the specified alley and portion of Ninth Street by unanimous vote (Commissioners Moody, Wood and Blair voted yes). The resolution was presented and adopted as recorded by the county counselor.
The board also approved two vehicle purchases for the Sheriff’s Department. Motion 26-297 recorded approval of a 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe purchased from the City of Colwich for $23,500. Later, the board approved purchase of a 2023 Dodge Durango for $38,825 to come from the Sheriff’s Department budget; County Counselor Emerson said the department expects some insurance reimbursement on that vehicle. Both measures were approved by recorded unanimous votes.
Road and Bridge Coordinator Alyssa Edwards presented an agreement from Cook, Flatt & Strobel Engineers, PA to update plans for County Bridge No. 70A. Edwards said the engineers would revise erosion-control design, update standards, submit permit applications and provide field‑check and letting services. The proposed contract cost is $21,400, and the board approved the contract by motion 26-308, vote 3-0.
County Counselor Emerson briefed the board on mid‑year budget breakdowns distributed to commissioners and said most accounts were on track; employee benefits was flagged as an account to monitor for the remainder of the year.
The board recessed several times for executive sessions under K.S.A. 75-4319(b)(1) to discuss non‑elected personnel — including requests from Sheriff Billy Tomasi, Health Department Director Debra Anthony, Ms. Tammy Alcantar (exit interview) and IT Director Brandon Spaur — and reconvened each time with no public action announced.
Commissioner Blair also noted a letter from Miner's Hall Museum about a grant application to restore outdoor murals in its Coal Camp exhibit and mentioned Greenbush's 50th‑anniversary celebration scheduled for Sept. 20, 2026. The board set future business items including a July 7 budget work session at 9:00 AM and a July 10 Planning & Zoning presentation. The meeting adjourned at 11:54 AM.
