Lauderdale County commission approves 2025–26 budget, $1.29M criminal justice grant and multiple resolutions

The Lauderdale County Legislative Body on June 9 approved the county’s 2025–26 budgets and a $1,293,921 Criminal Justice Program grant and passed a series of related resolutions and budget amendments.
The meeting, called to order by Lauderdale County Sheriff Brian Kelley at 6:00 p.m. at the County Courthouse in Ripley, opened with an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance before proceeding through a series of motions and roll-call votes.
Among the items approved was a Criminal Justice Program grant for $1,293,921. That request was moved by Commissioner J. Purcell and seconded by Commissioner M. Moore and approved on a voice vote. The commission also approved a request allowing the budget chairman and the county mayor to transfer final line items within budgets; that motion passed on a voice vote.
On a separate roll-call vote, the commission approved House Bill No. 1423, described in the record as an amendment to Chapter 262 of the Private Acts of 1963 (as amended) to relocate the Lauderdale County Probate and Juvenile Court to the Justice Complex. Commissioner D. Hartsfield moved the measure, and Commissioner S. Worlds seconded. The roll-call result recorded 21 yes votes and 3 no votes; the three no votes were Joe Carmack, Sherry Jones and Joe Pursell.
The body also approved Appropriations Resolution 6-25-1 and Tax Levy Resolution 6-25-2 by roll call, and passed Resolution 6-25-3 to appropriate funds to nonprofit organizations (one abstention — Susan Worlds — was recorded on the nonprofit appropriations vote).
Departmental budgets and amendments approved by roll call included the Water System budget and the Ambulance Authority budget. The commission approved school budget amendments and additional budget amendments for the General Fund (101), Fund-122 and Fund-207. The Building Permits Report was approved by voice vote.
The commission approved five people as Notary Publics — Sharon Bonds, Colton Dew, Jan Hodge, Rebecca Carmack-Summar and Cinda Tillman — by voice vote.
The meeting adjourned at 6:54 p.m. after a motion by Commissioner J. Pursell, seconded by Commissioner T. Rankin.
