The Scott County School Board voted June 23 to approve a Finance Director job description that the minutes say will be shared between the County and the School Division.
Vice Chair Lon "Steve" Sallee moved to approve the job description; Patricia Edwards seconded the motion, which passed with all members voting aye: David Templeton (chair); Lon "Steve" Sallee (vice chair); Patricia Edwards; William "Bill" Houseright; Rob Hood; and Daniel Meade.
The job description, included in meeting appendices, assigns responsibility for overall direction and coordination of county and school financial operations, development and maintenance of annual budgets (including cafeterias), long-range financial projections, internal controls, and compliance with federal, state, and local reporting requirements. It also directs the Finance Director to prepare and oversee financial reports, attend Board of Supervisors and School Board meetings as needed, supervise accounting staff, and participate in grant-writing efforts.
Minimum qualifications listed in the document require a B.S. degree in Accounting/Finance and five years of progressively responsible financial management experience; the description strongly prefers a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential and familiarity with governmental fund accounting standards (GASB) and GAAP. The description also notes the position may require frequent travel to school sites and occasional statewide or regional travel and requires a valid driver’s license for use in Virginia.
The minutes identify the job description as Appendix B but do not record additional discussion about salary, timeline for hiring, or whether the position will be posted immediately. The Board recorded no dissenting votes. The minutes list a June 2, 2026 memo from Superintendent Jason Smith introducing the job description.
