Dayton spotlights first‑year high‑school co‑op program, showcases 20 student internships

The Dayton City Commission on July 8 welcomed staff and 20 high‑school co‑op students placed in city departments through a first‑year partnership with Miami Valley CTC and Dayton Public Schools.
Keisha Kinney, who led the presentation, described the program as a reimbursement‑backed cooperative that offsets wages and provides technical on‑the‑job experience in water quality, public works and fire department roles. "We're hoping we're getting our next City of Dayton employees," Kinney said, and she singled out program staff Megan O'Leary, Karen Thomas and Dianetta Griffith for organizing the effort.
Students introduced themselves and named placements including the water reclamation facility, GIS team, public works, environmental management and fire department internships. Commissioners praised the initiative as a workforce pipeline: "It is always inspiring and validating to see other young talent coming into the organization," said Commissioner Beckham. Commissioner Joseph and Mayor Turner Sloss also commended staff and urged students to consider careers in public service.
City staff organized a photo and thanked the city manager's office for supporting the pilot. No action was required; commissioners asked staff to continue recruitment and report back on the program's progress.
