Village Hall construction proceeds after buried tank discovery; HazMat responded

Construction activity at the Village Hall site uncovered a tank that had been buried underground for several decades, Fire Chief Jason Buss told council on June 10. The discovery required Fire Department and Summit County HazMat assistance; Chief Buss thanked Service Superintendent Jason Walters and Engineer Daniel Collins for their help responding to the incident.
Service Superintendent Jason Walters said additional excavation, soil replacement and compaction were required after the tank discovery. Once that work was completed the project moved quickly: the foundation is in place and framing is expected to begin soon. Walters said the hydrant at the site still needs to be relocated to accommodate space constraints.
Walters and Collins told council the extra site work cost less than $10,000 and was within the contractor contingency. The council did not take a separate vote on the matter but received operational updates and offers of assistance for upcoming events from department heads.
Touch a Truck, a public event featuring fire and police demonstrations, is scheduled for June 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the Fire Department reported scaled activities including a bounce house, demonstrations and a helicopter if weather permits.
