Northfield council adopts emergency resolutions, confirms paramedic and finance assistant appointments

The Village of Northfield council on June 10 voted to adopt a series of emergency resolutions that advance midyear budget adjustments, personnel appointments and a grant application.
Councilmembers suspended the three-reading rules and approved Resolution No. 2026-24 authorizing certain amendments to the 2026 appropriation resolution and related transfers. Shortly afterward the council approved Resolution No. 2026-25 confirming the Mayor/Director of Public Safety's appointment of Michael Eddie as a part-time paramedic; the vote was recorded as yes by Councilmembers Hebebrand, Noack, Vojtush, Magistrelli and Hipps. No abstentions or no votes were recorded.
The council then confirmed Karen Mains as Finance Assistant and Lead Payroll Administrator through Resolution No. 2026-26. Finance Director Kara Dolansky introduced Mains at the meeting; Mains told council she has decades of experience and is excited to join the Village staff.
Council also approved Resolution No. 2026-27 authorizing the Mayor to contract for the Village's insurance policies through Wichert Insurance Company with Selective and Hanover as the carriers; Law Director Brad Bryan said the premium increased about 5% from last year due to higher property valuations and industry-wide cost pressures. The council adopted Resolution No. 2026-28 authorizing submission of a Nature Works grant application (the grant application is due July 1), and Resolution No. 2026-29 authorizing further appropriation adjustments. Each resolution advanced by a motion to suspend the three-reading rule and then a motion to adopt; roll call votes recorded five affirmative councilmember votes on each adoption.
Separately, the council approved a Planning Commission recommendation to consolidate three parcels into a single lot at 60 Heights Avenue. Councilmember Alan Hipps moved the lot-consolidation approval and Councilmember Renell Noack seconded; the roll call vote recorded five 'yes' votes and the motion passed.
What the council did not adopt: Law Director Brad Bryan reported that Ordinance No. 2026-17, amending the traffic code's vehicle-weight threshold, will be revised to increase a 10,000‑pound threshold to 18,500 pounds and returned for consideration at a future meeting. Ordinance No. 2026-23, enacting short-term rental restrictions, was read for a second time and scheduled for a third reading at the next meeting.
The council meeting adjourned at 8:36 p.m.
