Resident urges Portales to commission local artist rather than use AI-generated logo

During public comment, a resident identified as Colton told the council the AI-generated promotional image chosen to represent Portales misrepresents the community and should be retired in favor of local artwork. Colton said the image shows inaccurate material details—the mammoth tusk is malformed and the projectile depicted is not a Clovis point—and that using generative AI for a city identity risks appearing to ‘cut corners’ and sends revenue out of the community.
“Let's give this to our own people, hold a student competition or a competition of some sort for the community, and let residents vote,” Colton said. He noted Portales has university art students and local artists who could produce authentic work while keeping economic benefits local.
The chair invited Colton to discuss the matter with the city manager and the designer of the logo after the meeting.
