Dadeville’s council adopted Ordinance 5-29 to regulate land-disturbing activities by requiring grading permits for most projects that clear, grade, excavate or otherwise disturb the natural ground surface.
The ordinance’s purpose, as read to council, is "to protect public health, safety, and welfare by regulating land disturbance activities and requiring appropriate review and approval prior to commencement of such activities." The text lists exemptions for minor land-disturbing activities normally associated with single-family residential uses (home gardens, landscaping, building repairs, swimming pool installation), construction of a single-family dwelling on an individual lot less than one acre, installation or replacement of a manufactured home (unless located on Lake Martin), certain agricultural and commercial forestry activities conducted under best management practices, and other low-impact activities.
The mayor and planning staff emphasized the rule aims to prevent improper clearing and runoff problems. After noting the ordinance had been discussed during a prior work session, the council moved and approved Ordinance 5-29 by voice vote.
