Board hears enforcement report and honors departing member Shen

Deputy Steve Meyer reported enforcement activity for June at the July 9 St. Mary's County Alcohol Beverage Board meeting: tobacco compliance checks at 55 locations with two non-alcohol business failures, a later visit to 41 businesses with one non-alcohol failure, 14 DUI arrests with the sheriff's office and two with state police, and no shoulder-tap sales or park violations observed.
"For the month of June, it was quite busy," Meyer told the board, summarizing inspections, checks and training activities. Inspector Kevin Mullins reported he completed 15 inspections since the previous meeting and conducted several follow-ups where managers were not present.
The board then recognized Member Shen's service. Members praised Shen's contributions and discussed a potential appointee, Jim Hyle, described by one member as a retired military resident active in Leonardtown who would be a good addition. The administrator acknowledged filling the seat will be difficult and welcomed recommendations.
No formal appointment vote occurred at the meeting.
