Sherman conservation commission reports strong turnout for hiking program; schedules volunteer sessions and garden work

Commissioners said the recent hiking trails program attracted 36 attendees and featured presenters from Appalachian Mountain Club CT (AMC-CT), Deer Pond Farm, Great Hollow, and the Northwest Connecticut Land Conservancy (NCLC). Chairman William (Bill) McCann opened the event and provided 50 printed copies of the commission’s hiking guide. Members described the program as well received.
On garden stewardship, Commissioners Michael Conforti and Michele MacKinnon removed the pollinator garden’s perimeter fencing and added fencing around shrubs. Conforti will purchase deer repellent and is building a bench. MacKinnon reported milkweed seed self-seeding in parts of the garden and identified problematic weeds and invasives, noting stiltgrass at the garden edges and under a large red maple, Japanese knotweed and bittersweet vines on the bank, and a large patch of non-native burdock south of the garden that should be removed before it goes to seed. Volunteer Sue Moga has offered help this summer. The commission discussed possible garden expansion to make the site more inviting.
The commission set a Weed Warrior volunteer session for Saturday, June 27 to address invasive species and other maintenance needs. No formal funding decisions were recorded at the meeting; volunteers and commissioners will carry out the work.
