Volunteer Park forest praised; Sherman commission to share evaluation with Parks & Recreation for possible trail plan

The Town of Sherman Conservation Commission reviewed initial forest-evaluation findings June 10 and agreed to share the reports with the Parks & Recreation Commission to explore a potential trail system at Volunteer Park.
Chairman William (Bill) McCann recapped that Commissioner Jill Humphreys arranged for DEEP service forester Dave Beers to inspect two town forests (Colonial Park and Volunteer Park). McCann said Beers’ report is preliminary but that Beers was particularly impressed with Volunteer Park. Humphreys told the commission Beers noted the Volunteer Park stand has regenerated well after a timber harvest, is heavily populated with sugar maple and tulip poplar, and contains relatively little black birch; parts of Sherman’s forests also host mature white oak trees described during the meeting as a keystone species.
McCann said he discussed trail planning with Parks & Recreation Chair Fran Frattini, who told him Parks & Rec has been exploring adding a trail system at Volunteer Park. Members of both commissions agreed to collaborate, with McCann to send the forest evaluation reports to Frattini so the bodies can coordinate per their respective responsibilities.
The commission did not take formal action beyond agreeing to share the evaluations and to pursue inter-commission collaboration on trail planning.
