Selectmen pause new Abenaki trail construction and require maps, signage and an operational plan

Wolfeboro — After multiple field visits and reports of unmarked or changed trails, missing signs, unauthorized cuts and damage to ski operations, the Wolfeboro Board of Selectmen voted May 20 to stop any further trail construction at the Abenaki/Bright singletrack area until the town and staff approve maps, signage and an operational build plan.

Board members described confusion during recent site walkthroughs: maps provided were sometimes unreadable or inconsistent with the on‑the‑ground layout; some trails appeared to have been widened or altered; culverts and trail crossings were reportedly damaged by bikes; and some bike trail alignments were said to be affecting winter ski operations. One board member said the trails as built included "riprap" and cut widths much larger than expected, which impaired snow‑making and ski grooming.

The motion requires the trail operator to provide a master map (including hub maps and 'you are here' signage), an agreed maintenance plan, and for staff to confirm whether work already completed conforms with prior approvals. The board also directed staff to send a formal letter to the trail operator ordering a halt to new construction until these items are resolved; staff will prepare the letter collaboratively with board representatives.

What’s next: staff (Parks & Rec and department leads) and selected board members will draft the letter, review the license agreement (expires 12/31/2026) and set an agenda item to review the operator’s updated maps and maintenance plan.
