The Amityville Planning Board voted unanimously on June 4 to recommend that the Board of Trustees consider historical landmark designation for the house at 277 Ocean Avenue.
Owner/applicant Mark Costello described the 1898 house as a transitional structure between Victorian and early four-square styles with an unusual bay that extends to the roofline; he outlined preservation work carried out by previous owners and restoration efforts to original flooring and moldings. Joe Guidice, chair of the Historical Preservation Commission, told the board the commission supported inclusion of the house in the preservation program.
Following discussion, Chairperson Stephen Greenwald moved that the Planning Board recommend the property to the Board of Trustees; the motion was seconded and carried 5–0. The Planning Board’s role was advisory: the recommendation will be transmitted to the Board of Trustees for their consideration.
Next step: Board of Trustees will review the Planning Board’s recommendation and take any subsequent action on designation.
