Garden City says new 32,000‑sq‑ft recreation complex will open this September

Parks and Recreation Director Cliff Ducey provided a progress report on Garden City’s new recreation complex during the July town hall, saying construction is near completion and the facility is expected to open in September.
Ducey said the complex sits on a 13‑acre site (11 acres developed) at the former Haines School property and includes a 32,000‑square‑foot building with a double basketball court, administrative/community rooms available for rental, a fitness center, two large multipurpose rooms, and space for expanding youth sports offerings. "It's something fun to talk about and exciting, coming along really quick," Ducey said.
Outdoor amenities include six outdoor pickleball courts and a synthetic turf field marked for football, lacrosse and soccer. Inside the gym the city has set up additional courts that will allow a combination of basketball, volleyball and up to six indoor pickleball courts with a curtain to divide playing areas. Ducey said the pool is a 20‑meter facility with four lap lanes, a deep end with a slide, and a zero‑entry area; the complex will also have a splash pad and a half‑mile walking trail with red‑brick markers every one‑tenth of a mile.
Ducey said furniture and signage were being installed and staff expected to occupy the building soon. He encouraged residents to use the facility and to watch for program announcements once the opening date is finalized.
